Stuck in a job you’re so ready to move on from?
You’re certainly not alone.
I talk to professional career women on the daily, and feeling stuck is one of the most common challenges that pops up.
The good news? These women don’t stay stuck for long (not on my watch)!
In fact, their decision to reach out to me is usually the first step to major career momentum—BUT I can only help the ones who are ready to face the truth of what’s really keeping them stuck.
To get to the heart of the matter in our Career Discovery Call (a complimentary convo I offer to help my peeps know that we’re a great match to work together) I’ll ask one simple question:
Why do you think you’re stuck?
You might expect there to be a range of answers to this question. Everybody’s different, right? Well, funny enough, women who are truly ready to move forward reveal a similar reason why.
They don’t knock the job market, or harp on their lack of transferable skills, or blame the demands of family life.
Instead, they give this very real, very vulnerable response:
“Honestly, Cindy? I’ve been trying to move myself in the right direction, but I still don’t feel like I’m making progress. I feel like I should be doing more but it’s kind of overwhelming. I don’t know where to go next.”
Then, they’ll go on to share…
“Really, I don’t want to make a mistake. I don’t want to shift direction from my current situation and have everything blow up in my face, or just not turn out the way that I wanted it to.”
And there we have it.
They’re stuck because making a career move is steeped in fear—most often, fear of failure.
Maybe you can relate?
Have you ever needed to make a decision in some area of your life, but found yourself paralyzed because you didn’t want to make the wrong one?
The decision may have been as simple as choosing whether or not to spend a week relaxing on a sun-drenched beach instead of putting that money towards something “more responsible” (hello retirement savings!).
Or it might be more complex, like moving halfway across the world to pursue the career opportunity of a lifetime and leaving your entire fam behind. Either way, you can’t commit because you don’t want to do the wrong thing.
There you are, all up in your head thinking, analyzing, overthinking. Trying to come up with a way to move forward and make the perfect choice. Trying not to make a single mistake or misstep.
Only… that “perfect choice” doesn’t exist so you end up doing nothing! Sometimes you end up doing nothing for days or weeks or months or YEARS because you’re so worried about making the wrong choice.
I’ve seen it happen and baby, it ain’t pretty. Especially when it comes to your career.
Do you know what happens to a person who stays married to a soul-sucking job (no matter how cushy the title or how much cash lands in your bank account)?
That’s why being able to recognize and admit the truth of what’s keeping you stuck (your fear) is such a great blessing… and the perfect time to seek support to move you forward.
Because it can be really hard to stay in motion without support when you’re scared stuck.
This is why I do what I do. 🙂
So what CAN you do to start moving confidently towards fulfilling your full potential?
The way forward is simple.
It starts with shifting the meaning that you attach to your mistakes and failures.
You see, nobody can determine whether the results of your decisions are right or wrong, good or bad, except for you.
So thinking “I can’t choose because I might fail,” could just as easily be reframed as “I will choose, and if things don’t work out, I’ll simply choose again.”
Even better, consider this:
What if the decisions and choices that you make—taking this job versus that job, staying here versus not staying here—what if the results, even if they didn’t get you what you wanted, what if none of them were failures?
What if they ALL presented learning opportunities instead?
What if, instead of focusing on the outcome, worrying about whether you’ll succeed or fail, that instead you focus in on the experience, the process, the journey, the learning available in every decision?
With that focus, no decision or choice could ever be wrong, could it?
What I really want you to remember is this…
NO one decision, no SINGLE career move, no ONE life choice that we make is the ultimate, final, end-all, be-all destination. None of these can define your failure, or your success for that matter.
So, the best thing you can do to propel your career forward when you’re feeling “stuck” is to choose to see every decision as a perfect opportunity to learn what to do next.
You can’t ever control the outcomes of your decisions, but you can always take charge of how you perceive your results. That’s all you, baby. It’s all you!
When you take charge of the way you view your decisions, you win.
And I’m here to help you get there.

Hi. I just recently began to aggressively seek another position. I have been invited to 5 interviews for which 1 I bombed, 2 were OK, 1 was very good, and the other I aced. The 1 I aced and the 1 bombed I didn’t get. How can I increase my interview odds? Is this something you can help me to accomplish?
Hi Kyshun, thanks for your comment! Yes, we do have a program targeted to help you strengthen your interviewing success. It’s called Interview Mastery and is designed to help you build the interviewing skills & techniques to make you the candidate they want to hire. We’ll get in touch with you over email to see if this program is the right fit for you!
If you are still stuck, compare the alternatives. Are they really that different? Will they really produce different results in the long run? I can’t tell you how often I meet people weighing options endlessly when the consequences look virtually identical. Pick the easiest path or flip a coin and move on.
There is certainly something to be said for making a decision and getting into action mode!
