Picture this…

You wake up in the morning, stretch, and a feeling of pure joy takes over. You’re energized you from head to toe. Why? Because you’re thinking about going to WORK!

You get to the office, open your calendar, and feel excited about every meeting you’ll be in because you’re working on projects that make a real difference. At the end of your day you feel motivated, connected, & inspired to give even more tomorrow.

But what happens when you really imagine yourself courageously following your instincts, taking a leap, & launching towards this dream career?

Has this thought ever crossed your mind: I’ll lose everything I’ve already built and have to start all over from zero again. Maybe it’s just not worth it.

You see, anytime we start pushing against the edge of our comfort zone, fears come up; and this one is a biggie. The fear that if we pivot & change course, there’s no way to translate our past accomplishments into the next phase of our career. We’ll have to start from the bottom and rebuild all over again.

But, here’s the good news, that way of thinking is simply not true. Here’s why.

Everything thing you’ve done in your career is meaningful and serves you. Every experience, every project, and every bad boss is the foundation that you’ve learned from and stand on now.

There are two keys to making this foundation work for you.

First, believe that your past experience has value and is meaningful. Without that, you stop before you even hit go.

Second, highlight your most important skills. Your skills are the bridge between your past & your future. Even if your job title or industries are very different, focus on the skills you can transfer from one job to the next. Make a list of skills you’ve developed in your past jobs that are important for your next one. This is what you highlight in your resume.

If you’re a HR Manager today and dream of becoming a software sales executive, one common skill is servicing customers. Write out every example of how you serviced the heck out of your customers as an HR Manager and use that to position yourself as an extraordinary sales rep.

Everything you’ve done has value. Believe it.
